A fatal illness is any sort of disease that can lead to the death of the person who has it. This type of illness will generally kill the person directly, though it will sometimes lead to other complications that may actually lead to the death of the individual concerned. For example, some illnesses can weaken a body so that breathing becomes hard and then impossible. Death will then technically be due to the patient's inability to breathe and get oxygen to his or her brain. However, it will still be understood in these types of situations that the fatal illness was really the underlying cause.
It should be noted that not all fatal illnesses will end up leading to death. There are many that are considered to be fatal because it is possible that they could lead to death if they are left unchecked. However, the medical field and the technology that the doctors possess have increased to the point that it is possible for them to save many people from things that are otherwise fatal. One example would be how chemotherapy can reduce and even eliminate cancer, though cancer would often kill the patient if nothing was done.
It is also interesting to look at the history of fatal illnesses to see how things have changed over time. Technology and general medical knowledge have gotten so much better over the years, and especially over the last two hundred years, that many things that used to be deadly are now considered to be quite trivial. People use to die from a fever or from getting the flu. While the extreme strains of these things can still be dangerous, the more common ones are just considered to be something that people have to go through.
It should also be noted that age plays a large part in what is considered to be a fatal illness and what is not. Chicken pox is an example; they can be deadly to an adult but are often weathered by children with no problems. The children feel uncomfortable for the duration of the disease, of course, but they are never in danger of losing their lives to it. This is true even without medical attention. In the same way, certain diseases can cause death in an elderly person whose body is weak. The same diseases could be shaken off in days by a younger person.
